Danai Loukidi was born in Athens and started taking classical violin lessons at the early age of six. After high school, she turned her focus on the musical heritage of the eastern Mediterranean region. She studied musical traditions of Greece and the Balkans in 2007 at the Technological Educational Institute of Epirus, in the Department of Traditional Music (Greece).
She continued her education at the Istanbul Technical University (Turkey), 2012 – 2013, on an Erasmus scholarship, where she studied along Cihat Aşkin. She participated in numerous seminars of classic ottoman music and instrumental improvisation (taksim) with Evgenios Voulgaris, Ömer Erdoğdular and Socrates Sinopoulos. She studied Music for Theatre and Cinema with Nikos Kypourgos. On June of 2017 she completed her graduate studies at Codarts – University of the Arts, under Michalis Kouloumis and Kudsi Erguner with focus on Violin Performance in World Music and the development of phrasing and ornamentation in taksim.
The last five years she is performing internationally on the stages of Istanbul, Holland, Germany and Greece playing and singing traditional pieces, arrangements and her own compositions. Among others she has collaborated with Chronis Aidonidis, Nektaria Karantzi and Evanthia Reboutsika. Some highlights of her career were, her performance at the biannual festival “Violins of the world”, representing Greece as a soloist on the stage of CRR (Cemal Reşit Rey) in Istanbul and her performance for the “4th and 5th World expatriate expedition meeting– His majesty the Greek Immigrant”, in Ancient Olympia (2017) and in Stavros Niarchos Foundation (2018).
In 2019 she was selected by Ross Daly to participate in Mitos Orchestra, of Labyrinth Musical Workshop, where she performed with several distinguished musicians such as Ross Daly, Kelly Thoma, Zohar Fresco, Evgenios Voulgaris, Charis Lambrakis, Efren Lopez, Derya Turkan, Yurdal Tokcan and Göksel Baktagir.
She is a founding member of the duet Mosaic, performing with the jazz piano player Yiannis Karygiannis. She is a violin and traditional singing instructor and delivers seminars on “Theory and practice of modal/Eastern Mediterranean, Ottoman music” and “Greek tradition singing technics” to beginners, semi-professional and professional musicians.
